Brief History
The origins of the Mercer Insurance Group began in 1844 when the
Mercer County Mutual Fire Insurance Company was incorporated by
the State of New Jersey after a group of Pennington, New Jersey
merchants, farmers and homeowners met to form a company to provide
affordable protection from fire. Mercer operated solely as a company
providing protection from fire until 1959 when it changed its charter
to engage in writing multiple lines, homeowners and general liability
coverages and changed its name to the Mercer Insurance Company.
In order to further diversify its business, Mercer Insurance
Company organized a subsidiary company in the early 1980’s,
the Mercer Insurance Company, Inc. and obtained a license to do
business in Pennsylvania. In 1997, Mercer Insurance Company
changed its state of domicile to Pennsylvania, and renamed its
subsidiary company, Mercer Insurance Company of New Jersey, Inc.
From its humble beginnings providing fire insurance to residents
and businesses in Pennington, New Jersey, the Mercer Insurance
Company has grown to an organization providing fourteen lines
of business in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, writing over $30 million
in business and maintaining a surplus in excess of $30 million.
